Theo Koins are fun to collect and easy to use!
We’ve taken every possible precaution to ensure your cryptocurrency investment will be there when you need it, and there are just a few simple precautions to take when using your Theo Koin. Whether you’re adding value to your coin or redeeming its value, it’s important to follow the simple steps below.
Here are a few simple reminders to get you started:
add as much crypto as you want, as often as you want, but you can only redeem its value once
your coin is insured, but there are limits you should know. Read up about it here, and diversify your holdings across multiple coins if your holdings exceed our limits.
make sure that the currency you send matches the wallet address on the coin. We’ve got some safety features in place to prevent some mistakes, but new forks create new risks.
Adding Value to Your Theo Koin
Step 1 – Login to your hot wallet
Soon, you’ll be able to use the Theo Koin app to easily purchase cryptocurrency and send it to your coin. For now, simply log in to your favorite hot wallet provider – you’ll need to do this from a smartphone or device with a camera, since you’ll soon be scanning QR code on the coin’s security seal.
On iOS devices, we prefer the Blockchain Wallet app. There are lots of good options and alternatives, so feel free to use the app you are most familiar with.
Step 2 – Initiate a new transfer
The most important part of this step is to ENSURE you’re transferring the right cryptocurrency to a matching coin. With all the many blockchain forks, quite often it’s possible to send Bitcoin to Bitcoin Cash and many other bad combinations.
Luckily, each Theo Koin is clearly marked on the security seal the type of wallet and private key contained in the laser etching. The recognized currency code is located on the bottom of the holographic security seal, in enlarging/reducing text that shifts when tilted in light.
From your smartphone app, choose the send option that allows you to scan a QR code.
Step 3 – Scan the sticker QR code
This step is important, so pay close attention.
Your Theo Koin is manufactured with a strict adherence to the highest quality standards. Each Theo Koin, created exclusively at our facility under constant supervision, is protected by a government-level security seal, then sealed using ultrasonic technology in a protective plastic case, and finally glued inside paper packaging. Starting with a Theo Koin in any other form increases the risk of use.
Before adding any value to your Theo Koin make sure there is no sticker or obtrusion interfering with the original security seal on the coin – this is called a MAN IN THE MIDDLE hack. Before you scan the QR code on the Theo Koin security seal, make sure that you have clear and unobstructed access to the original, untampered sticker.
The security seal on each coin features a 6-digit wallet “SNIP” – this code is the 2nd through 7th digits of your wallet address. It’s a shortened preview of your coin’s public key, and it’s an easy way to make sure that the address you scanned matches the address on the coin. Just quickly review the TO address in your hot wallet and make sure that the 2nd-7th digits match the coin “SNIP”. Confusing? Check this page for more info.
For added protection, use our SNIP lookup tool. This handy little tool will tell you all there is to know about your Theo Koin, including the complete public key (wallet address). Compare our public key against the key that you scanned to make sure you’re sending cryptocurrency to the right address!
We also encourage you to visit our website and lookup the manufacturing data for your Theo Koin – we’ll be able to show you what your coin looks like and confirm we did in fact manufacture the product you’re about to use!
Step 4 – Enter the amount you want to send
Did we mention it’s really important to make sure the sticker you scanned matches the TO address in your app?
Once you’re SUPER sure you’ve got a matching address, enter the amount of crypto you want to add to your Theo Koin. Remember that each Theo Koin is insured, so be certain to follow the best practices to maximize your protection.
Complete the transaction and take a deep breath! You just put your cryptocurency risks on ICE!
Step 5 – Confirm the transfer
It’s a great idea to do a small test transaction before you send your entire portfolio.
You can add value to your Theo Koin as often as you like – there’s no limit to the number of times you can top up, or the amount you can store on a single coin! So, it’s a great idea to send a small test amount.
We recommend using the Bitcoin Paper Wallet Checker app for iOS.
Just open the app, scan the QR code on the coin’s security seal, and the coin balance will display on your screen. Again, be sure to check if the 6 digit SNIP matches the 2nd-7th digits of the wallet address.
Redeeming Your Theo Koin
Redeeming your Theo Koin is just about as easy as adding value. But again, there are a few important steps you can take to ensure your cryptocurrency is easy to redeem.
Here are a few simple reminders to get you started:
- do NOT use any sharp objects or abrasives to clean the coin
- we made the security seal very tamper resistant and difficult to remove – don’t be surprised if you need to clean the coin surface before scanning the QR code. WD-40 acts as a quick and easy solvent – works in seconds!
- if you’re having trouble scanning the QR code, simply type the text into a QR code generator to create a scannable QR – case sensitive!
- the coin scans best on a quality phone in good lighting conditions – get a nice contrast for easy scanning.
Step 1 – Remove the holographic seal
There is a small, 0.5mm gap between the security seal and the inside edge of the coin rim. It’s often difficult to get between the coin and the seal. Using your finger nail, gently pry the plastic surface of the security seal away from the coin.
Underneath the security seal, you’ll find left behind a honeycomb-pattern tamper-evident residue.
Step 2 – Remove residue from the coin surface
To get a good scan, you’ll need to remove the leftover tamper-evident residue.
After extensive chemical testing, we found that WD-40 is a easy to find & easy to use solvent that quickly desolves the residue, wiping away fast & without fuss. Other chemicals, like lighter fluid, paint removed & turpentine also work well, and will not damage the surface of the coin. Rubbing alcohol also works, but requires a lot more time and effort.
Whatever you do, and regardless of the chemicals used, DO NOT use any sharp object to scratch off the residue. We designed the security seal to be tamper-resistant, and the byproduct of this security is increased difficulty in removal. We tested and found a great balance between the two, but you can quickly damage the etching on the coin’s surface by using a knive, nail, metal scraper, or other sharp instrument. If you make a smeary mess of the coin surface, stop, secure your coin, take a break, and track down some WD-40. It’s available lots of places and will quickly return your coin to scan-ready condition.
Step 3 – Open your hot wallet for importing
Soon, the Theo Koin app will offer a wallet import feature. Until then, choose a wallet you trust. We like the Blockchain app or Bread wallet on iOS.
Open your wallet app and login. Reach a high level of confidence in the app’s security and continue.
Step 4 – Find the app import function
Each app is a little different, so please consult your app’s documentation on the best way to import a wallet from cold storage.
Check the “Settings” or “Wallet Addresses” section of the app, where you’ll find the place to import a wallet.
Step 5 – Scan the coin QR code
Now, one quick scan and your cryptocurrency is ready for prime-time!
Scanning can often be a little tricky. All you need for the private key QR code to scan is a little patience, a good quality camera, and some nice lighting contrast. Watch out for reflections and other optical interferences that can make it difficult to catch the right angle of the QR code.
If you’re not able to scan the QR code, the complete private key is etched around the rim of the coin. You can visit our secure QR code creator, where you can type in the private key text (it’s case sensitive!) and get a scannable QR code.
